Lymphatic Massage

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE

Manual Lymphatic Drainage massage is a gentle technique used to transport lymphatic fluid from swollen areas to well-draining areas. The gentle, rhythmic motions can aid in prevention of fibrotic tissues and may be paired with deep breathing or “diaphragmatic breathing” which enhances the effects of Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage. This technique can reduce swelling, increase or redirect lymph flow and helps to soothe and relive pain.

More about Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

One of our talented massage therapists, Alna, is certified in Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage and we are so thrilled to offer this service to our surgical patients. Read on to learn more about what MLD is and how it can optimize your healing!

How does MLD Work?

MLD creates a suction effect on distal collectors. Each session will start with activating the regional lymph nodes, which are located in different areas of the body. Once the nodes are activated, we then move the fluid to these lymph nodes which helps to accelerate the drainage of cellular waste.

MLD Aids surgical healing by reducing swelling, fluid retention, bruising and the removal of cellular debris. Reducing scar formation and the build up of fibrotic nodules. Decreasing the risk of infection by improving the body's immune response. Supporting relaxation and relieving stress.

What you can expect

MLD uses light, gentle touch in the early stages of healing. As the body heals, deeper techniques are implemented. Our therapists will check in regularly for any pain or discomfort as well as ask if there are particularly sensitive areas. Open communication between the therapist and patient is highly encouraged.

What we do

‘MLD’ uses light, gentle touch in the early stages of healing. As the body heals, deeper techniques are implemented. Our therapists will check in regularly for any pain or discomfort as well as ask if there are particularly sensitive areas. Open communication between the therapist and patient are highly encouraged.

What we do not do

Our therapists do not push fluid out of unhealed incisions or reopen closed incisions.

Who is MLD not for

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is not recommended for those who have a heart condition, have kidney failure, blood clots or an active infection.

How many sessions

Each patient will heal differently, so the amount of sessions will vary. For optimal healing results, patients may need up to 20 ‘MLD’ sessions. Your therapist will communicate with you as you heal and advise you on future appointments

Recommendation

Our therapists recommend two MLD sessions prior to surgery to prepare the body for excess fluid buildup.
